Moving Forward

Overview

Welcome to Your Yard! Attending to your feelings about the loss of your loved one is a critical part of grieving. Loss-related feelings likely include a strong yearning and longing for the person who died and preoccupation with the deceased. However, adapting to the grief also requires reengaging activities that are important to living and can help to restore a sense of balance and purpose in your life. For many bereaved individuals, “moving forward” can bring its own set of mixed feelings, including a sense of guilt that they are leaving behind the memory of the lost loved one. But, in fact it is possible to do both, mourn the loss of our loved ones and move forward to restore a sense of purpose and joy in our lives.

In your Yard, you will find resources that focus on restorative activities that can bring a sense of recovery and wellbeing. Such activities include exercise, meditation, yoga, spiritual activities, calming/mindfulness, enjoying nature, and engaging in recreational activities that are important to you. Of course, not all of these suggestions may be your choices and it may take time to take these steps, but the goal is for you to once again take a chance, leave your house, get outside, and engage life. Use the Self-Care Journey section to keep notes about your own experiences and how you would like to care for yourself through your grief journey.
